The forts were established by the Hudson's' Bay Company.
The upper fort, which is now Winnipeg's downtown (just
south of Broadway at Main Street) was built in 1836.

The lower fort was built in 1840 and is about 32 kilometers downstream from the upper
fort.
Uses for the forts included a Royal Canadian Mounted Police training
centre,
Penitentiary, insane asylum, country club and residence for Hudson's Bay officials.
In 1951 Hudson's Bay gave the forts to the Federal Government.

The buildings were restored in the 60s and 70s, and is now the oldest intact stone fort
in North America.
Lower Fort Garry is fully operational during the summer months and is a joy to observe
the workings of an old world fort.
